Season 2 Episode 34: More Missing Friends

Carl and Agent Grassley go missing together.

Helona awoke just as the night began its surrender to the day. When the fog of dreams cleared, and she remembered where she was, she held her breath and listened to the morning sounds. She heard no quiet stirrings from Carl or Lt. Grassley’s sleeping bags. She also heard no tramping of feet at the edges of the camp, no whispered conversation, and no rustle of activity. She sat up, looked around, and saw that Carl and Lt. Grassley’s sleeping bags lay empty, and the morning chill gave way to a sense of dread as she realized she was alone.

She crawled out of her sleeping bag and slithered quietly to where she could lay her hand on the cold surface where Carl had slept. She found tracks he’d made earlier that night when he’d left, and then she remembered that he had gotten up about an hour before midnight to take his turn at the watch. He should have woken her an hour or so ago to take her turn. She leaped to her feet, heart pounding, grabbed her day pack and spear, and jogged swiftly out into the gathering twilight.
