Helona Chubock stepped up to Sherry Smith’s door and knocked, delighted at the opportunity to visit her friend.

When no one answered, she rang the doorbell, but there was still no answer.

She got out her phone and dialed Sherry’s number. A hoarse voice answered in a whisper.

“Hello?”
