Carol Berlin Holbrook woke up in a cage.
Dim light shined down on her from recessed LEDs in the ceiling of the small cell, which was barely long enough for her to lie down in. The stunner that the robotic sentry had shot her with had taken away all muscle function but hadn’t rendered her unconscious, which had come later from the prick of a needle in her thigh.
Her clothing had been replaced by a loose-fitting smock stretching to her knees, but warm air blew on her from somewhere, and she didn’t feel cold.
