Carol and Steve find the signal from another escape pod that might need their help.
Carol sat up and stretched, then scowled when she saw the empty space beside her. She loved sleeping in, especially here, where every morning felt like a campout. Her husband liked getting up early to leverage fresh brain cells.
She quickly got dressed and tiptoed barefoot through the damp grass the several steps between their tent and the open service hatch in the side of the escape pod, which she and Steven used as their home office--whenever it wasn’t serving as an indoor gathering place, technology hub, or emergency shelter for the small farming community of their little group of castaways. “I’m cold,” she lied, wrapping her arms around his neck from behind.
“Good morning, Mrs. Holbrook,” he said. He unlocked the seat, spun it around to face her, and pulled her onto his spacious lap. She giggled when she bounced against his jelly belly.
“Whatcha doin’?” Carol said and then kept his mouth too busy to answer for several minutes while she planted a long, messy kiss on it.
